Fire Safety in the Home

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is one of the nation's leading information and knowledge resources on fire, electrical, and related hazards. While no one wants to think about it, unfortunately a disaster can occur anywhere, and often times when we least expect it. For that reason, it's best to be as prepared as possible to both a) try and prevent such a disaster, and b) know what to do if one does occur. Here at Buffalo Builders, we'd like to take a moment today to explore both topics.

Requirements for Smoke Alarms in the Home

The National Fire Protection Association recommends homes should have smoke alarms installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. So that means a 2 story, 3 bedroom house needs a minimum of five smoke alarms. Of course, installing the smoke alarms correctly, and making sure they are in good working order, is also an important component of keeping your home and family safe from fire.

Different Types of Smoke Alarms

There are two distinct types of smoke alarms out there, and it's important to know the difference. The two types of smoke alarms are called ionization and photoelectric. An ionization smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires, and a photoelectric smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, both types of alarms or combination ionization-photoelectric alarms, also known as dual sensor smoke alarms, are recommended.
