Your home should be a safe haven for you and your family, and we’re sure you’ve worked hard to make it so. However, there are certain events, such as disasters, that can change this for you. Though you’d never want to wake up to a fire in your home, for example, it is possible. Buffalo Builders, Inc. DKI would like to give you a few tips on how to prepare for a fire in your home, as well as how to prevent them from happening.

Preparation

  • Have a family meeting in which you discuss the importance of fire safety
  • talk about an evacuation plan in case of fire and remind your family that the most important things to get out of the home, are themselves
  • also remind them of simple fire safety rules
  • stay low, roll out of the bed and crawl to a safe place
  • check to see if the door is hot by placing the back of your hand against the door, if it is hot then you’ll want to choose an alternate evacuation point if possible
  • Make sure that your family members sleep with the doors to their bedrooms closed-this will be helpful in making sure smoke or fire do not enter their rooms too quickly
  • Lastly, ensure that you’re smoking detectors are all current, clean, and contain working batteries

Prevention

  • Keep space heaters away from materials which are flammable-approximately three feet away is a safe range, and if possible ensure that you’ve got those which will automatically switch off, should they tip over
  • While cooking, do not walk away from what you’re doing-if the need should arise for you to leave the room, especially while cooking on the stove, turn it off
  • Do not leave fires or candles unattended in your home
  • Ensure that you’ve got smoke detectors in all sleeping areas as well as rooms where there are heat sources present
