Mold Growth in Attics

Mold growth in the attic is something we see often here at Buffalo Builders.  As a result, we felt it would be worth it to share with you the primary causes of attic mold growth, and what can be done to prevent and/or treat it.

What Causes Mold to Grow in Attics?

If mold is discovered in the attic, it's almost certainly due to a combination of air leaks and improper ventilation.  These two things combined are a recipe for mold, and due to the infrequency with which the average person carefully inspects the state of their attic, the problem can inconspicuously get out of control.

Air Leaks in the Attic

When warm, moist air from the living space below gets into the attic, the first half of the mold equation is present.  This happens due to improperly installed ventilation, which ideally would carry such moisture all the way to the exterior of the home.  However, often times the moist air escapes in part or entirely from the vent before it reaches the outside, and as result is dumped into the attic.

Improper Ventilation in Attic

When, due to poor ventilation, the moist air is allowed to stick around without drying,  the mold equation is complete.  Properly ventilating the attic is more complicated than one would assume at first glance.  Airflow on its own is not enough.  Rather, the air pressure must be balanced properly so that negative air pressure in the attic does not end up exacerbating the problem by attracting even more warm air from the space below.
